Bottle of Edizione Pennino Zinfandel 2018 red wine.

2018 Edizione Pennino Zinfandel

Deep garnet in color, the 2018 Pennino Zinfandel is immediately appealing, with aromas of warm strawberry-rhubarb pie, clove, and ripe boysenberry. In the mouth, the wine is dense, with good weight and fine, rounded tannins. Refreshing acidity and sweet oak support the elongated finish.

Edizione Pennino Zinfandel honors Francis Ford Coppola’s maternal grandfather, “Edizione” means “edition” in Italian, so this is Inglenook’s “Pennino Edition” of Zinfandel. Two historic Zinfandel clones, Morisoli and Werle, complement each other in the creation of this tribute wine. The Morisoli lends structure, sweet fruit, and spice, in harmony with Werle’s inherent richness and dark fruit tones. The oldest Zinfandel vines on the historic Inglenook estate are in our Cow Barn, Woodshed, and Carriage blocks, which were planted in 1974 and 1978, and continue to provide the central core of the Pennino blend.

The 2018 vintage produced a generous Zinfandel crop of excellent quality. Well-timed precipitation in the spring gave the growing season a good start. Bloom in late May and moderately warm temperatures paved the way for our first Zinfandel pick on the gently-sloping Gate blocks behind the Chateau on September 27th. After a few days we brought in fruit from our dry-farmed blocks at the west end of the Rutherford bench. The 2018 Pennino harvest was completed on October 1st with the Saddle and Bridge blocks.
