The Inglenook Estate, best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, has always grown small amounts of white varietals used primarily to craft Blancaneaux, our flagship white wine. In 2011, we grafted some Sauvignon Blanc onto a selection of Petite Sirah vines after experiments revealed that one of our vineyard lots was able to produce a Sauvignon Blanc with unique floral characteristics. This is our second year producing this wine.
In spite of a sizeable earthquake during the summer and the challenges associated with California’s ongoing drought, 2014 was an outstanding season that delivered fruit of such high quality that the vintage may be judged more superior to the impressive vintage that preceded it. Winter was drier than normal, but we received more rain than in 2013. The growing season was consistently warm, yet never excessively hot, and our fruit achieved excellent concentration because there was less vine vigor than the year before. Veraison came early as did harvest once again. We began picking white grapes in August, even earlier than the year before, and were extremely attentive to the vines, harvesting grapes at precisely the right moment to ensure the fruit retained its vibrant natural acidity, which is vital to creating a well-balanced wine.
Our 2014 Inglenook Sauvignon Blanc bestows a beautiful perfume where a mélange of tropical fruits and Meyer lemon mingles with notes of honeysuckle and flower blossoms. From the round, silky palate emerges flavors of citrus fruits and pineapple that finishes with a touch of minerals. Vibrant and expressive with body that reflects an exquisite vintage.
