Purchase Estate Merlot 2007

The Wine

Merlot was first planted on the Rubicon Estate in the1880s by the property’s founder, Captain Gustave Niebaum. Although Niebaum was not aware of the historical significance at the time, Rubicon Estate was actually the first place in the United States where Merlot was planted. For more than 100 years, it was continuously grown on the Estate with little recognition until the 1950s, when viticulturists from University of California at Davis came to the property looking for proof of the vines’ lineage. Viticulturists confirmed via laboratory analysis that our Merlot is, in fact, the first Merlot planted in the New World. These cuttings were given the certification of Merlot Clone #1. Today, this clone is still the most widely planted source of Merlot in California.

Vineyard Notes

There are three blocks of Merlot currently planted on the Rubicon Estate; Gio, Red Barn, and 1215 Niebaum Lane. The Gio vineyard, which comprises the oldest vines, is planted with Clone #9, a selection from Northern Italy. It has racy flavors of wild berries and violets. Red Barn fruit, Clone #3, which is descended from the historic Gustave Niebaum Clone #1, is the darkest and densest, with Cabernet Sauvignon-like flavors of dark cherry and forest spice.

1215 Niebaum Lane

is the smallest vineyard, barely an acre, which is also planted with the Italian clone. Because this block is dry-farmed, the grapes ripen early and deliver red raspberry and cherry candy flavors.

Organic Farming

All 235 acres of vineyards on the Rubicon Estate are farmed organically out of respect for the environment, the vineyard staff, and the intrinsic value of our property. Of equal importance is our belief that organic grapes make better wine. Our vineyards are certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (www.ccof.org).

The Vintage

2007 began with a dry, but cold winter. Then, rather unexpectedly, spring was uncharacteristically warm. As a result, budbreak occurred early. Summer in Rutherford is always warm, but the streaks of very hot weather that typically occur late in the season and early fall simply didn’t happen. The summer was exceptionally even, with nearly perfect textbook warm days and cool nights. So, even though the season started early, it lasted longer than we expected. However, it also provided us with ripe, physiologically perfect fruit that showed tremendous concentration as a result of the weather and a smaller than normal crop size.

Winemaking Notes

Rich, ripe and luscious, our 2007 Estate Merlot offers fragrant aromas of black cherries and briary berries laced with violets and licorice. Sweet, juicy flavors of raspberries and plums are embellished with notes of vanilla and spice. Dark, dense and beautifully textured with well-integrated wood and smooth tannins.
