Captain’s Reserve wines are produced in extremely limited quantities each year, exclusively for wine club members, those who shop with us online and guests of the Estate. They are named in honor of Captain Gustave Niebaum, the visionary who, in the 1880s, founded Inglenook and brought Napa Valley worldwide recognition. Made from organically certified estate grown fruit, our Captain’s Reserve Syrah illustrates the depth and intensity of flavors that have made Rutherford famous, in a style that does not require aging to be enjoyed.

Because most of our Estate wines are designed to mature and develop complexity with cellaring, it was our goal with the Captain’s Reserve to craft wines that would not need aging and be immediately accessible upon release. To accomplish this we employ slightly different winemaking techniques, so that our Captain’s Reserve Syrah has rich, complex flavors but with soft, supple tannins that make it easy to drink when young.

The 2007 vintage commenced with cold winter temperatures but very little rain. Then, the pendulum swung the other way and spring arrived with unusually warm weather. Because of this dramatic shift, budbreak occurred early. Summer unfolded with ideal conditions: warm days and cool nights. Then, the heat waves we typically expect during late summer or early fall never happened, which prolonged the growing season longer than normal. As a result, nature provided us with ripe, physiologically perfect grapes that showed tremendous concentration. And, because the vines yielded a smaller than normal crop, the wines from this vintage are extremely well balanced.

Our 2007 Captain’s Reserve Syrah offers a velvety palate, supple tannins, and a dramatic perfume of crushed wild berries, violets, and cedar. Big, rich and sweet, the juicy flavors of baked cherries and black currants are enlivened with notes of smoke, cloves, and spicy gingerbread.
