Captain’s Reserve wines are produced in extremely limited quantities each year, exclusively for wine club members and guests of the Estate. They are named in honor of Captain Gustave Niebaum, the visionary who, in the 1880s, founded Inglenook and brought Napa Valley worldwide recognition. Made principally from grapes grown at Rubicon Estate, these wines are created to illustrate the local flavors that have made this region famous.

Because most of our Estate wines are designed to mature and develop complexity with cellaring, it was our goal with the Captain’s Reserve to craft wines that would not need aging and be immediately accessible upon release. To accomplish this we employ slightly different winemaking techniques, so that our Captain’s Reserve Syrah has rich, complex flavors but with soft, supple tannins that make it easy to drink when young.

2006 was a vintage that favored our special terroir in Rutherford. Despite excessive rain during the winter and early spring season, budbreak occurred just slightly later than normal with no vine damage at all thanks to our agricultural practice of using cover crops.

Fruit set occurred under optimal conditions and the grapes matured in a summer that saw several heat spikes followed by more moderate temperatures; this helped the fruit retain a balanced natural acidity. In fact, temperatures remained mild from the end of September well into October, which allowed us to delay picking even longer.

Because nature never forced our hand, the grapes had several extra weeks to mature. The resulting fruit showed even ripeness and excellent color.

Our 2006 Captain’s Reserve Syrah delivers evocative notes of boysenberry jam, spice box, and violets. The palate is lush with supple tannins and rich, juicy flavors of baked blueberries and red plums, along with leather, smoke, and a toffee impression that’s sweet and alluring.
