We received only a handful of cases of the large format of our Syrah. Great for parties and gatherings, the magnum (1.5L) is always a conversation starter and a show stopper.

Captain’s Reserve wines are produced in extremely limited quantities each year, exclusively for wine club members, guests of the Estate and our valued customers who shop with us online.

They are named in honor of Captain Gustave Niebaum, the visionary who, in the 1880s, founded Inglenook and brought Napa Valley worldwide recognition. Made from grapes grown in the finest Napa Valley vineyards—including Rubicon Estate—these wines are created to illustrate the intensity and depth of flavors that have made this region famous.

Because most of our Estate wines are designed to mature and develop complexity with cellaring, it was our goal to craft a wine that would be age-worthy, yet still accessible immediately upon release. To that end, the Captain’s Reserve Syrah undergoes traditional winemaking techniques so that the wine has round, supple tannins and expressive flavors up front, making it inviting when young and food-friendly upon pulling the cork.

The 2005 vintage was an exceptionally late vintage in Napa Valley, mainly due to a cool summer and larger crop that required more ripening time to achieve optimal ripeness. Because of the large crop, all vineyards on the Rubicon Estate were thinned a total of three times, reducing the yield to ideal levels for the highest quality fruit. The fall weather was magical, and the warm and sunny conditions throughout October bestowed on the fruit powerfully concentrated flavors.

Our Captain’s Reserve Syrah is hand-harvested in the cool morning hours and delivered immediately to the winery. After sorting and crushing is accomplished, the must is allowed to “cold soak” for 48-hours prior to the onset of fermentation. This maximizes color development, while gently extracting the soft, velvety tannins from the skins. The French and American oak barrels then add alluring scents of vanilla and charred wood to the blend.

Our 2005 Captain’s Reserve Syrah has the telltale purple hue of Syrah and intense aromatic notes of boysenberries, black licorice, sandalwood, and spicy jam. Rich and succulent, the dark fruit flavors and a hint of exotic spice deepen upon the long, silky finish.

A magnum (1.5 liter) is the equivalent to two standard-sized bottles (750 ml).
