2007 Captain’s Reserve Pinot Noir

Captain’s Reserve wines are produced in extremely limited quantities each year, exclusively for wine club members and guests of the Estate. They are named in honor of Captain Gustave Niebaum, the visionary who, in the 1880s, founded Inglenook and brought Napa Valley worldwide recognition. Made from grapes grown in the finest Napa Valley vineyards—including Rubicon Estate—these wines are created to illustrate the intensity and depth of flavors that have made this region famous.

Because most of our Estate wines are designed to mature and develop complexity with cellaring, it was our goal with the Captain’s Reserve to craft wines that would not need aging and be immediately accessible upon release. Cabernet, of course, has been our main focus, largely defining the Estate over the years. So, it’s a thrill for us to make Pinot Noir because the varietal is very different in terms of how it must be cared for and cultivated, and which winemaking techniques we use.  Pinot Noir is far more delicate than Cabernet; it has a sensuous character and a more refined texture. To that end, we engage a totally different approach to this varietal in order to achieve a silky, elegantly-styled wine.

The 2007 vintage in Napa’s most southern district of Carneros was a beauty.  Literally one mile from the bay and the Napa River estuary, Carneros is more uniform in temperature than Rutherford. Typically, temperatures next to the bay are in the high 70’s to low 80’s during the summer, whereas Rutherford (Cabernet country) gets temperatures in the high 80’s and low 90’s. Ironically, it is not uncommon for nighttime Rutherford temperatures to drop down into the low 50’s, while Carneros temps linger in the high 50’s. The cooler and less dramatic temperature swings mature Pinot Noir evenly and fully. The cool temperatures also delay ripening so the grapes spend most of the fall on the vine prior to harvest. This extended hang time is important and vital to great winemaking.

Prior to fermentation, the grapes underwent a 48-hour cold soak to maximize color extraction and enhance the aromatic compounds of the must. Once complete, almost half of the delicate Pinot color has already been gently coerced from the skins.  Temperatures are then increased with the onset of fermentation.  We utilize traditional punch downs on our Pinots, and feel the technique adds structure and a fuller mouthfeel. The wine ferments to dryness on the skins, is left alone for five additional days to marry, and is then drained directly into French oak barrels.

Our 2007 Captain’s Reserve Pinot Noir displays a rich magenta color and considerable opacity due to the wine’s incredible concentration. It’s a warm, rich and spicy Pinot with tantalizing scent of cherries, strawberries, spices and flowers. Voluptuous in character with beautiful concentration, the wine presents profuse flavors of raspberries, black cherries, tea leaves and Chai spice with a toasted vanilla oak edge from the barrel aging. Its long, dramatic finish also flaunts this wine’s impeccable structure.
